  22. This is the freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh. There is also
  23. a commercial version of Eudora called Eudora by QUALCOMM (Version 2.0
  24. and above).  If you would like information about the commercial
  25. version, a brief description is provided in the Balloon Help menu of
  26. this freeware. Select About Commercial Eudora to display this dialog.
  27. You can also subscribe to the QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies
  28. (QUEST) mailing list by selecting QUEST Mailing List from the Balloon
  29. Help menu. This list will provide subscribers with occasional
  30. information about Eudora, Eudora by QUALCOMM, and other QUEST
  31. products.

  33. The latest freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh can be found on
  34. ftp.qualcomm.com, in the directory quest/eudora/mac/1.5. The Macintosh
  35. freeware user manual can also be found on ftp.qualcomm.com, in the
  36. directory quest/eudora/mac/documentation. The user manual is formatted
  37. in Microsoft Word format.

  39. Both the freeware and its documentation can also be retrieved via
  40. e-mail using QUALCOMM's list server. To obtain the freeware, send a

  72. To install the Eudora freeware, just copy it onto your hard disk.

  77. -------------

  79. The first time you run Eudora you will have to edit some of the
  80. configuration information in order to be able to send and receive
  81. mail.
  82.  
  83. Select Settings... from the Special Menu.  The Settings dialog is then
  84. displayed with the Getting Started settings selected.
  85.  
  86. The fields you need to review are:
  87.  
  88. POP Account:  To use Eudora, you must have an account on a computer
  89. that runs a POP3 server.  This is the account to which your e-mail
  90. messages are delivered before they are transferred to the Eudora
  91. program on your PC.  In this field, type your login name for this
  92. account and the full (domain) name of the computer, separating them
  93. with an "@" sign.  For example, if your assigned login name is
  94. "carolyn," and the name of the computer where you receive e-mail is
  95. "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu" in this field.
  96.  
  97. Real Name:  Type your real name.  Your name, as it appears here, is
  98. displayed in parentheses after your return address in your outgoing
  99. mail.  It is also displayed in the sender column of all messages you
  100. send.
  101.  
  102. SMTP Server:  To send mail, a computer with an SMTP (Simple Mail
  103. Transfer Protocol) server program is necessary.  You need not have a
  104. login to this computer, but you must have access to it through your
  105. network.  If the computer on which you have your POP account is also an
  106. SMTP server, leave this field blank.  Otherwise, specify the name of
  107. the computer you want to use as your SMTP server.

  109. Return Address:  Normally, Eudora uses your POP account as your return
  110. address.  If you wish to use a return address other than your POP
  111. account, enter it here.

  115. COMPATIBILITY
  116. --------------
  117.  
  118. System 6
  119. --------
  120. Symptom: Eudora refuses to run.
  121. Explanation: Sorry, Eudora does not run under System 6.
  122. Workaround: None.
  123.  
  124.  
  125. AppleTalk Remote Access:
  126. -----------------------
  127. Symptom: you get an alert that says "the selected port is in use".
  128. Explanation:  If you have ARA's "Answer calls" option selected (from
  129. Remote Access Setup from Setup), and you have Eudora configured to use
  130. the Communications Toolbox on the same port that ARA uses, Eudora may
  131. be unable to connect. This is a conflict between the Communications
  132. Toolbox and ARA.
  133. Workaround: Turn "Answer calls" off in ARA if you have this problem.

  136. Apple Modem Tool
  137. ----------------
  138. Symptom:  Eudora cannot login to your server, instead timing out during
  139. the navigation process.
  140. Explanation:  Eudora is incompatible with version 1.0 of the Apple
  141. Modem Tool.
  142. Solution: You must use version 1.1 or later of the Apple Modem Tool, or
  143. the Hayes Modem Tool.  We recommend the use of version 1.5 of the Apple
  144. Modem Tool.
  145.  
  146.  
  147. Moire
  148. -----
  149. Symptom: 68040-based Macintosh crashes when Eudora is launched.
  150. Explanation: Eudora is incompatible with the screensaver "Moire", when
  151. run with the 68040 caches enabled in 32-bit mode.
  152. Workaround: We suggest the freeware screensaver "DarkSide".
  153.  
  154.  
  155. NOW Utilities 4.0/SuperBoomerang
  156. -------------------------------
  157. Symptom: When launched, Eudora complains about being unable to open
  158. certain mailboxes, claiming they are "too large".
  159. Explanation: The "reopen documents" feature of SuperBoomerang is the
  160. problem It will not work as intended with Eudora, and it is really not
  161. necessary for Eudora anyway.
  162. Solution: You may disable this option by using the "Disable Re-Launch"
  163. menu in the "Exclude..." dialog in the SuperBoomerang control panel.
  164.  
  165. Symptom: You cannot set your application to open TEXT files or your
  166. attachments folder.
  167. Explanation: Versions of NOW Utilities prior to 4.0.1 interfere with
  168. this aspect of Eudora.
  169. Solution: Upgrade to NOW Utilities 4.0.1 or later. 
  170.  
  171. Symptom: Eudora crashes when printing.
  172. Explanation: NOW Up-to-Date Reminder 2.0's Show Battery Status option
  173. causes crashes when Eudora is printing.
  174. Workaround: Turn Show Battery Status off.  NOW is aware of the problem,
  175. and has promised to fix it.

  177.  
  178. Norton Directory Assistance
  179. -------------------------
  180. Symptom: The attachment folder does not change, even if you set it with
  181. the dialog.
  182. Explanation: Norton Directory Assistance interferes with this aspect of
  183. Eudora.
  184. Workaround: Hold down the option key before clicking the button in the
  185. Attachments dialog, and keep it down until the Standard File dialog
  186. opens.

  188.  
  189. Global Village PowerPort Modems
  190. ------------------------------
  191. Symptom: Attachments are sometimes corrupted or characters are lost in
  192. text messages.
  193. Explanation: Flow control in Powerbooks is very poor.
  194. Workaround: The best solution is to use version 1.5 of the Apple Modem
  195. Tool, set to "Software MNP" error correction.

  197.  
  198. CAP/aufs
  199. --------
  200. Symptom: Mailboxes are frequently corrupted.
  201. Explanation: CAP/aufs has a bug that causes problems with Eudora and a
  202. few other programs.
  203. Solution: A patch is available (#168); be sure you have it.
  204.  
  205.  
  206. KA-Share
  207. --------
  208. Symptom: Attachments saved to KA-Share volumes cannot be opened from
  209. within Eudora.
  210. Explanation: KA-Share does not implement file id's.
  211. Workaround: Do not put your attachment folder on a KA-Share volume.
  212.  
  213.  
  214. Apollo
  215. ------
  216. Symptom: Crashes.
  217. Explanation: Version 1.0 of the Apollo application launching utility
  218. cannot handle long window names (such as Eudora generates) if
  219. configured to sort windows alphabetically.
  220. Workaround: Use the Window menus page of the Preferences dialog to set
  221. the sorting to front-to-back.

  223.  
  224. Greg's Buttons
  225. -------------
  226. Symptom: Dialup Eudora does not work.
  227. Explanation: Versions of Greg's Buttons prior to 3.0 may interefere
  228. with the Communications Toolbox.
  229. Solution: Upgrade to Greg's Buttons 3.0 or later.
  230.  
  231.  
  232. FileGuard 2.5.1
  233. -------------
  234. There are reports of problems between Eudora and FileGuard 2.5.1.
  235.  
  236.  
  237. DoubleScroll 2.0.3
  238. ----------------
  239. Symptom: Eudora windows scroll off into oblivion.
  240. Explanation: DoubleScroll has a bug.
  241. Workaround: None.  The author of DoubleScroll has promised a fix.
  242.  
  243.  
  244. MenuChoice 1.9
  245. -------------
  246. Symptom: Choosing an item from a submenu of the Apple menu causes
  247. strange dialogs and crashes in Eudora.
  248. Explanation: MenuChoice 1.9 has a bug.
  249. Solution: Get MenuChoice 2.0 or later.

  251.  
  252. AutoDoubler
  253. -----------
  254. Symptom: None
  255. Explanation: Eudora normally uses "asynchronous" i/o to files, enabling
  256. smoother operations to fileservers.  AutoDoubler interferes with
  257. asynchronous i/o.
  258. Workaround: Eudora automatically disables asynchronous i/o if it finds
  259. AutoDoubler on your system.  StuffIt SpaceSaver (Aladdin Systems) does
  260. not suffer from this problem, so you could also switch to that.

  262.  
  263. Mac340
  264. -------
  265. Symptom: Strange font displays in Mac340 and/or Eudora.
  266. Explanation: Eudora and Mac340 both use private fonts, and there is an
  267. id conflict.
  268. Workaround: Use a font other than "Mishawaka" in Eudora.

  275. We can't test all situations or Macintosh configurations. If you think

  279. (if any) error messages Eudora gave.
